I'm sure I'm not alone in saying somewhere along the way you've heard someone say "stay away from chiropractic." My image of chiropractic was your body being twisted and bent in ways it wasn't supposed to go. I was doing a pretty good job of that on my own.

How quickly old wives tales and gossip can be forgotten when you get relief from unbearable pain. Come to think of it, I don't believe any of the people who put the fear of chiropractic in me have ever actually been to one.

I am a 42-year old electrician generally in good health. In my job, I frequently lift heavy electrical switch gear. One day I was working next door to Atlas Chiropractic and Wellness Center. I was going down the hallway and all of a sudden it felt as though someone had plunged a knife in my back. Due to the pain, I dropped to my knees, and there I stayed, barely able to breathe.

My coworker helped me outside and wanted to take me to the hospital. I wanted no part of that. With every move, the stabbing pain returned. My friend went next door to Dr. Boccella's office and returned to tell me that he would see me. In my mind I wondered what they could do. I was in serious pain and unable to crawl on my own. my coworker said they could take x-rays. Because of the pain, I decided x-rays would at leaser reveal if something was broken or crushed and then I could get to a "real doctor." As I crawled the 20 feet to Dr. John [Boccella]'s office, little did I know fate was being really good to me. Dr. John [Boccella] helped me into the exam room for x-rays and made me as comfortable as possible. In my moments alone in that room, I noticed modern equipment - not shrunken backbones and torture racks that so many people talked about! My brain was in control of my thoughts, but the pain was in control of my body.

It has been three months since my first visit. I can't believe how much better my life and health is. I often suffered from terrible leg cramps at bedtime, which kept me awake 30-60 minutes, and at least once a month, I woke up with a stiff neck. I assumed it was old age catching up with me not that my back and neck were out of alignment, causing secondary pain not mention the relief I've found since not being able to stand up and walk pain free on that day of disabling pain.

I've learned a great deal about the spine and how important it is to the body. I look at it as a marriage - the brain being the husband, who thinks he's in control, and the spine being the wife, who really runs the show.

I no longer say "stay away from chiropractic care." I recommend it to anyone who tells me they are in pain; it is a way to live a better, healthier, pain-free life.
